Educators, policymakers, and scholars call for education agenda focused on mitigating the impacts of poverty on students and schools

On Tuesday, February 23rd at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, educators, education scholars, and policymakers will gather to release a new policy roadmap and discuss the next steps for addressing poverty-related impediments to teaching and learning.

In 2008, the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education (BBA) and its signatories called for a policy agenda that acknowledged poverty as a root cause of disparities in education and called for policies that would mitigate its impacts. While this agenda was considered radical at the time that perception has shifted and many BBA policy priorities, such as early childhood education and health care and nutrition support, have been embraced by policymakers and education experts. Seven years after its initial launch, as a whole-child agenda gains momentum in the mainstream of education policy, BBA is relaunching with new co-chairs, a new advisory board, and an expanded mission statement with a broad array of signatories—including educators, scholars, policymakers, community, faith, and civil rights leaders, and people who have served in both Republican and Democratic administrations.
